The Twins really put the hurt on the Devil Rays, pounding out 17 hits (half of which probably didn’t leave the infield) and forcing the D-Rays to use every member of their bullpen, except for their closer.

Luis Castillo saw action again after missing quite a few games; he got right back into the swing of things (pun unintended), going 3-for-6 with 2 runs scored. Joe Mauer and Jason Tyner would also have 3 hits apiece.

Michael Cuddyer was 0-for-2 but had 2 RBI. He left the game after a. being hit with a pitch, and b. stumbling and then somersaulting on his way to third. He’s got a bruised back but should be back in the lineup tonight.

Sidney Ponson had, by far, his best outing so far this season. He threw 7 innings (season high), struck out 5 (1 short of season high), allowed 5 hits and 2 walks while giving up just 1 run, a solo homer. Matt Guerrier and Juan Rincon finished off the game for the Twins, each pitching hitless innings. They combined for 2 walks and 4 strikeouts.

With the return of Castillo and Jeff Cirillo, Alexi Casilla was sent back down. The Twins can’t turn this kid into a merry-go-round with AAA Rochester and the Twins. He’s got to stay somewhere and play, and if that’s down in AAA then he needs to come up if somebody gets hurt and he can replace them or during September’s roster expansion.

Tonight’s game starts at 6:10 (as does tomorrow’s) and we’ll see Boof Bonser tonight and Ramon Ortiz to finish off the series tomorrow.
