It wasn’t a very pretty game last night. Johan Santana lasted just 6 innings, giving up 5 runs (only 3 earned). The Indians are the only team in history to beat Johan 3 times in a season. Matt Guerrier came on and recorded 1 out (on 1 pitch) but then was taken out so Dennys Reyes could come in against the lefty. Denny needed 2 pitches to give up a hit that would score one of the unearned runs charged to Santana. Denny was then replaced by Pat Neshek who also gave up a hit to drive in an unearned run. Sometimes Gardenhire tries to manage a little too much. Guerrier and Neshek are our top relievers, and left-handed opponents are batting just .213 against Guerrier this season. However, they are batting .263 against Reyes. It just doesn’t make sense to me to take Guerrier out after 1 pitch.

The bats were pretty silent, getting 8 hits but only 2 runs to show for it. They had something going in the second when Michael Cuddyer got a hit in his first game back from the DL, but 1 pitch later Justin Morneau grounded into a double play. Torii Hunter got a single but was then caught stealing second base. Mike Redmond then led off the 3rd inning with a single.

Infielder Jeff Cirillo was let go yesterday after being claimed off waivers by the Arizona Diamondbacks. The Twins didn’t revoke him and didn’t have enough time to work out a trade, needing his roster spot for Cuddyer to come back. So they didn’t get anything for him, except a little bit of money. I want to go deeper into the subject and will do so in my next post which will also recap today’s afternoon game. It starts at 2:55 and Matt Garza is starting.
